What Is Riprap and Why Is It Used Around Bridges?

Riprap is large, durable rock that is sometimes placed around bridge abutments and along waterway banks. It helps protect these areas from erosion and scour caused by flowing water, which can gradually remove soil and material from around a bridge.

By helping stabilise vulnerable areas, riprap can provide long-term protection for both the bridge and surrounding banks.
